Open Source a Red Herring?
November 16th, 2007

I was thrilled to hear yesterday that Ingres has been selected from a field of 1800 as a finalist in the “Red Herring 100 Global” Award. This means that Red Herring has judged Ingres as one of the best tech startups in the world, which shouldn’t really come as a surprise given the level of innovation that’s happening within Ingres.

Ingres is delivering on the promises of rapid innovation and ease of integration made by open source evangelists for years. The Icebreaker family of appliances provide a single installable image of tightly integrated open source components, and much more importantly it provides a single integrated maintenance stream for the appliance. What that means is that when you patch the appliance you get an integrated set of fixes for everything from the content delivered to the browser to the operating system and they’ve all been tested together by Ingres before the update is released. It amazes me that companies like Oracle, SAP and Microsoft who supply comparable technology stacks haven’t yet solved this problem after years of trying.

The other area in which we’re innovating is in the delivery vehicle for the appliance; in recognition of the fact that the hypervisor is becoming the most popular deployment platform in the datacenter, we’re delivering virtual appliances which are specifically targeted as this platform.

It’s an exciting time to be part of Ingres and it’s gratifying to have Red Herring recognize our endeavors.
